The square is now all lit up for the Christmas season. I took tons of pictures but none came out like I hoped or envisioned so I'm still working on it. Meanwhile, I'll at least post this one. I love Christmas time.
A couple of hints: Use a tripod (required for this), and play with slowing down the shutter speed. Pick a subject, and shoot at 1/10, 1,2,4,6 seconds, and compare the results. Also, take your existing photos into some editing SW to play with the highlight and brightness settings. Lots of times you can pull out a better image that way. Google's free SW, Picasa, has some very good basic tuning controls that will get you 95% of the way there, which is good enough for most things. Picasa is also a good way to manage your photos. I have over 22,000 photos in Picasa at this time, and love it.
Just like me, I've been trying to get some shots of SA's christmas lights but so far no luck.
