The Yellow Smart Car

The Smart car in Seguin

With gas the way it is and environmental concerns becoming more and more of an issue, it's a very good idea to start looking seriously at the Smart car and hybrids now more readily available on the market.

I have spotted three Smart cars in different colors: blue, red and yellow. I've been trying to snap one for a while now. They are always on the go. :) If you want to read a bit about the car, check out this article.

I want one. They are so cute, I read where they are very safe also.

Me too Jim. First, I want to ride in one. I read something on CNN about it being more safe than expected but of course not in all situations and particularly on the highway, which I wouldn't want to take this anyway. I can see this as a zip-around-town deal.

I saw my first Smart Car in Mexico a few years ago. Wouldn't mind owning one.

I think the SMART car is great, but not too practical with two growing kids...one still in a car seat!! I wish they could come up with something that had a real backseat!!

The Smart has an interesting history. The watchmaker Swatch approached Mercedes about building a Swatch car with removable body panels so the owners could customize the cars like the watches. Mercedes said OK, built an assembly plant and tooled up for the car. At the last minute, Swatch got cold feet and backed out of the deal. Mercedes, not at all happy about this, said, "Well, Swatch left us with this big bowl of lemons so we best get crackin' on makin' some lemonade..." MBZ dumped the changeable body panels, but kept the body panels colorful. They made a few other changes and put the car on the market as the Smart. It hasn't done very well in Europe and MBZ was thinking of taking their losses and pulling the plug on it, especially after their deal with Chrysler in the U.S. started turning sour. MBZ brought Dieter Z. ("Louis" forgets his last name) back from Chrysler to Germany to run MBZ. Dieter said, "Wait! Let's sell it in the U.S.!" They almost laughed him out of the room. "The Americans only want to buy pickups and SUVs. They won't buy this!" Somehow Dieter prevailed - and the waiting list for the Smart in the U.S. is about 15 months.... So Dieter Z. looks like a genius and the Smart was saved - at least for now....

SMART would be perfect in our township ~ where it is small enough to squeeze through the traffic jams.

I love the bright yellow of this one! Very cute! I wonder if you'd feel like you were driving around in a tuna can and how comfortable it would be for those of us with mile long legs? ha ha They do look like they'd be fun to zip around in!
