Rain Thingy

I thought these lion heads made for some very cool rain whatevers. I don't know what these are called either but I am having an sort of animal thing going this week I see. I just thought they looked neat and it's a nice way of directing rain rather than have it just go into a regular rain gutter onto the pavement.

I think they are called rain spouts. The following link: Gargoyle rain spout shows one, it's on the floor, but I think it serves the same purpose. But again, I'm all for thingy things. *hehehe*

Your Google page rank is most likely high when one searches for "thingy" ... Good eyes I would have missed the spouts.

They are gargoyles. The concept goes back to the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Etruscans. The European gargoyles of the Middle Ages were intended to direct the rainwater away from the foundations of a building -- usually a cathedral or castle. If you ever visit Washington, DC, there is a wonderful gargoyle tour at the National Cathedral. Take binoculars!
